The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly: SES London Day 2, Part 2 :: StumbleUpon Update

Posted by ciaran

You’ll all be glad to know that following yesterday’s rather disappointing lunch, I went out today and had a calzone at an excellent Italian restaurant. The only negative aspect to this is that I’m feeling rather bloated due to all the carbs, and so really need some great presentations to grab my attention.

Session 4: Video & Podcast SEO

I debated whether or not to attend this session as I felt that it could either be absolutely fascinating or, well, not. One speaker in and I’m worried that it may be the latter. Admittedly, there’s some good stuff on using ID3 tags when creating podcasts, but unfortunately I’m only human and can’t separate a presentation from the way in which it is presented.

I think that the organisers of any conference should be made to sit through every session so that they can get a feel for the varying levels of presentational skills that the visitors have to endure. I actually feel that most of the presentations at SES have been reasonably strong, but there are still too many who simply put their script onto slides and then read them back to an audience (who can probably all read themselves).

There are also often too many sales pitches (again, SES London hasn’t been too bad this year*), so when Onil Gunawardana from blinkx stands up, my heart sinks. Apparently they’re the biggest video search engine there is and have indexed over 18 million hours of video. They’ve also produced a guide to video SEO, but Onil isn’t going to take us through it. Why not? That’s what were here for! If you do want to read it, you can find the link to the PDF here.

If you want to read more about blinkx (and you probably should, it’s pretty interesting - I just resent typing up a pitch), then TechCrunch is a good a place as any.

Tim Gibbon from Elemental, who also spoke in this morning’s News SEO session, goes over some of the same points that have already been covered: using keywords in descriptions, titles, & tags; creating individual pages for each piece of content; putting keywords in URLs; ensuring that content is RSS friendly. Any of this sound familiar? Yeah, me too. Tim does use a real-life example, but he does suffer slightly from the fact that the session organiser doesn’t seem to have checked the various presentations to make sure that they don’t overlap too much. I would have loved to have seen an in-depth case study of the work they did on the Adidas campaign, but maybe that’s just me.

I’m afraid that when the final speaker stood up and announced that he was the CEO of an in-video advertising start-up, I seriously felt like walking out. So I did.

Session 5: Images & Search Engines

I was planning to cover the session on searcher behaviour, but it’s standing room only and I haven’t mastered blogging whist standing up yet, so Images & Search Engines it is.

Both Li Evans of KeyRelevance and Scottie Claiborne highlight the reasons that sites should be optimising images, and they’re compelling ones. The numbers of searches are immense and it is, in many ways, still an untapped market. Li shows some great examples of popular consumer products where the only images showing in search results are ones being submitted by the consumers themselves; the retailers are missing out on huge opportunities to attract traffic to products they sell, which the market is interested in. Li also points out, with the help of some compelling case studies using Hilary Clinton and Rudy Giuliani as examples, that with the advent of universal search, image optimisation should also be a consideration in terms of reputation management.

The final speaker is Maile Ohye of Google. (I don’t think you need me to link to their site. Oh, ok then.) The first thing that she points out is that doing a search for, let’s say, "flower images" in the main, blended search and in the image search itself will return different results. There are, apparently, different systems ranking them.

Maile also details the factors that Google takes account of when indexing and ranking images:

  • Colour, texture, & spatial layout
  • Information surrounding the image (text, etc.)
  • Quality of the image
  • Quality of the site
  • Layout of the page
  • Attributes, alt
  • Hotlinking (where an image is pulled from another site)

One thing that highlights the point Li made is a site called Schmapp; it’s a tourist guide where all the photos are, as far as I know, taken from Flickr. I mention it because they contacted me to ask if they could use a photo I took in Sydney. Obviously I said yes, and it’s just a great example of a place where you might be able to seed content if you have interesting images.

Unfortunately, I had to leave before the final session as I had a prior engagement, which was a real shame as I was definitely looking forward to the session on Social Search. This is the end of my second day at SES London 2008; it’s been a mixed day, but overall a good show.

Tomorrow should be a good day, with site clinics and sessions on brand reputation management & looking at the brave new world of consumer generated & controlled content. And, of course, there’s the promise of free beer to look forward to in the evening.

*I was told that a speaker in the European Case Studies session made a comment about my post from yesterday, where I said that the Mobile session started off with sales pitches. What I of course went on to say is that the discussion which followed was thoroughly interesting, and this is really my point. I have no issue with vendors speaking, I just personally think that they’re more likely to make sales when they concentrate on imparting interesting information in an engaging way.

This isn’t meant to be an exercise in SES bashing - I’ve really enjoyed it but just feel that, in common with every single conference I’ve ever been to, it could benefit from a bit more quality control. Which probably means that I’ll never be asked to speak at SES, which will well & truly learn me, I guess.

Ciarán heads up the SEO & Social Media team at online marketing agency Altogether Digital. He wishes he didn’t have to leave SES early.

Link Exchange 2.0: Page Exchange :: Search Engine Optimization Weekly Report

Posted by Esteban_Panzera

Exchanging links has been a common practice for some time now between webmasters that want to increase their search engine rankings. Lots of these webmasters trust their rankings solely to their link exchanges. The big problem with this is that these kind of links are known to be deprecated by search engines, and even Google is telling us not to do link exchanges in the webmaster guidelines. I remember when Google added to their webmaster guidelines that we shouldn’t buy and sell text links, we all know how that ended.

This was what made me think about link exchanges and what would Google do with them. In my opinion, it is just a matter of time until Google starts penalizing (massively) the sites that have lots of link exchanges on them, the ones that increased their link popularity artificially by exchanging links in an abusive way.The other thing that came to my mind was that these kind of links were usually situated on the sidebar or the footer of pages. What I also remembered was that these kind of links were also deprecated by search engines for not looking natural.

These two things got me thinking on how we could still exchange links without getting penalized and without getting our links deprecated by search engines. Some ideas came to my mind, but the one I think was the best is the one of page exchanges, which would let webmasters still exchange links that  would also be relevant and not deprecated.

What would page exchanges consist on?  Webmaster A would get a link on a new page of webmaster B’s website that would cover the topic of the site of webmaster A. The link would be situated into the article so that it looks more natural. This way, the link would be relevant and not deprecated. In exchange, webmaster B would get a link on a new page of webmaster A’s website that would cover the topic of webmaster B. The most important thing here would be that both sites would have to be inside the same niche; this way, both would be getting highly relevant links, content would look natural, and both would be getting a great article on their website.

In case you got a bit confused by my explanation, this graphic will hopefully make you understand this concept better:

Want to be really sure that Google won’t penalize you?  What I used to do when doing link exchanges was cross linking. This would be:

Site A (webmaster 1) links to site B (webmaster 2) and site C (webmaster 2) links to site D (webmaster 1)

This is probably the best way of exchanging links, as it is very difficult to get caught. The only problem with this type of link exchange is that we would probably not be getting relevant, non-deprecated links, as they would be placed on websites of any topic and on footers (probably). We can apply this cross link exchange method to page exchange too; the only thing we would need here would be 4 websites of the same topic or 2 pairs of websites of the same topic. Page A (from Site A) of Webmaster 1 would link to Webmaster 2’s website (Site B), and page C (from Site C) of webmaster 2 would link to another of webmaster 1’s website (Site D).

In case my explanation was not clear enough, this graphic, I shall clarify:

If you want to do page exchanges, there are some extra considerations you should take into account:

  • Internal Linking.  In which part of the website will the new page get linked from? Getting linked directly from the homepage would definitely be the best, but you could also agree with the other webmaster on linking to it from inner pages. Just be sure you are both linking in the same levels and make sure the other webmaster is linking to the page from somewhere.
  • Same Niches.  This is pretty important for many reasons. The first one is visitors — if they see an article that has nothing to do with your site, they will probably get a bad impression of it. Another reason would be search engines, as they might also see you are linking to a website that has nothing to do with your site’s niche. Remember that if you keep it under the same niche, it will look more natural and it would be much harder to get caught.
  • Onsite SEO of the new page.  On the new page that would be created at the other webmaster’s website, try to include the keywords you will be using as anchor text on the title tag, heading tags, and the content of the article. Don’t forget to use these keywords as your anchor text and to put the link inside the content of the article.

Wait! Does this also mean I can sell pages? Exactly! If you just sell pages to websites that are in your niche, there is no way you can get penalized (just make sure not to say that someone paid for that page to be there or that you are selling pages on your website), as you are giving users content-rich articles plus links to get more information about that topic. Happy Page Exchanging!

Learn SEO Basics: Internal Anchor Text :: SEO Times

Learn SEO Basics Internal Anchor Text

This is one of those things that is somewhat obvious but often overlooked when doing SEO. I’ve discussed previously about Anchor Text for Backlinks, but what about the anchor text of links between the pages of your site? To prevent from boring you, I will be going beyond the lecture about not using links with the word “click here”, and give you some ideas of how to improve your existing content quickly and easily.

But does internal anchor text really matter to Google and other search engines? The answer, Yes! Even though backlinks (links from other sites) are definitely one of the most important aspects of SEO, internal links have an important role in showing to search engines what is important on your site as well as what is related.

Before you proceed, two things to keep in mind. (1) Too many links is not better than just the right amount. Keep it user friendly and readable and I think that’s the balance Google et al. will like. (2) This is especially helpful for long tail keywords, which users are using more and more.

Siloing (Theming)
Don’t let the word “siloing” scare you. All siloing means is sectioning your site into “themes” and structuring your menu and links in a tiered fashion within each theme. If you offer a service, for example, section out your services or products into several (3-5) themes. Each theme has a major keyword and a main page. Your site template should have a link to all of these themes (so on every page of your site). On the theme main page you would then have links to sub-pages that use sub-keywords of the main theme keyword. For example:

Service: Plumbing
Themes: Plumbing Supplies, Plumbing Services, Plumbing Emergency
Plumbing Supplies sub-pages: Kitchen Plumbing Supplies, Bathroom Plumbing Supplies, Wholesale Plumbing Supplies, Discount Plumbing Supplies, Plumbing Supply Stores, *brandname* Plumbing Supplies…

Link With What You Got
If you have a site, you should have some content already too. Here is a simple query that will help you to find where on your site you’re already using keywords:

http://www.google.com/search?q=site:mydomain.com+”my+keyword+phrase”

Notice I am limiting the query to only my site/domain using the site: operator. Also notice the keyword phrase is in quotes, so you find an exact match.

So if I were writing about link building (look at that, I am) then I would first do a search like:

http://www.google.com/search?q=site:soloseo.com+”link+building”

and see which page I mention the phrase “link building”. I see many pages that I do, but the top result has that keyword in the title tag and in the URL, so that is the page I am targeting for that keyword.

Go through your top 20 keywords to start with and see how many more links you can get to them from within the content of other pages. In-content links have innate value because they have context (text around them) and are thought to be more “editorial” than site-wide or menu links. (Google is pretty smart, they can tell which part of your page is the content and which is the menu)

Link While You Write
While you are writing a blog post, an article, or a new page for your site, keep in mind other pages that have been written before as you go along (and you can use the same query above). If you are writing and you mention something related to another product, service, article, or blog post, consider using the keywords for that page in the sentence and make it a link.

For another nice review with some diagrams (albeit a little busy), see this YouMoz article.
