Tracking the success of an organic SEO campaign is quite straightforward for ecommerce sites but the rise of social media marketing is leaving a lot of people scratching their heads and wondering how to track social campaigns.

The first task in any campaign has to be to work out the goals. Without goals it is impossible to measure success. Below are some common goals for a social media campaign along with an explanation of how to track them.

Improving Google rankings (linkbait)
The best way to improve your Google rankings is to get as many high quality natural links as possible. Releasing interesting content and promoting it using social news websites can lead to a lot of links but how do you track it?

My first method is to estimate a value for each link you get. For example a link from a leading tech blog is worth maybe £200. Add up the links you get to an article and you can see a direct ROI. This method is somewhat difficult as only SEO professionals can accurately estimate the value of a link.

Another method is to measure increases in traffic and sales as your rankings for a particular keyword improve. This is a good method but rankings don’t always change, even after a successful campaign.

Building a blog / newsletter readership
Tracking blog and newsletter subscribers can be accomplished using Google Analytics quite easily. Placing a value on each new subscriber is tricky but once you have a set value tracking a campaign is easy.

Building traffic levels for branding
Traffic levels are easy to monitor but hard to measure in terms of value. One method is to place a arbitrary value on each visitor and add up the totals at the end of the campaign. To gauge the values of each visitor it is useful to look at the number of pages they viewed on your site. For example Diggers have low value and only view 1.1 pages whereas visitors from a blog in your niche might view 3 pages.

Making ecommerce sales
Assuming a site is tracking sales right down to the visitor source and keyword this method of measuring ROI is very straightforward. Write a list of all possible sources that are sending traffic as a direct result of your campaign and drill down into your stats to find the sales figures.

Of course any social media campaign will probably result in sales, subscribers, links and traffic so the key is to place a value on all these variables before the campaign launches and track everything as you proceed.

Post Comments :: StumbleUpon Update

The BBC added a few social bookmarking buttons to their website during August allowing users to easily submit BBC content to Digg, Facebook, Reddit, Delicious and StumbleUpon.

With such a large site adding social bookmarking buttons it would be surprising if it resulted in a major increase in traffic. After all the BBC has much more traffic than Digg in the first place.

Looking at the traffic data from Alexa it appears that the BBC has been in decline this year. Even if it had a story on the Digg homepage every day would that result in much additional traffic? Why is the BBC in decline?

Probably the most interesting way to look at the impact of the Digg buttons is to examine the number of links pointing to each post.

The chart below shows every BBC post from July to November and it is clear that the number of links to each post is increasing. This seems to be due to the Digg effect as most of the posts with lots of links were on the Digg front page.

Can You Earn Money in AdSense Revenue Sharing Forums? :: SEO Times

Ad: Convert visitors with Google Analytics - free

Back in May 2004, DigitalPoint Forums opened a revenue sharing program that enabled the members share in the Google AdSense revenue earned in the forums. At that time, the idea was unique - Shawn Hogan coded his AdSense system to work with member’s Google AdSense publisher IDs. If that member started a thread, his publisher ID would show up 50% of the time when ads are displayed.

A DigitalPoint Forums thread asks members of the forums how much money they have made all time. So I decided to look up exactly how much money I made and I see from day one, I made $5.13. To be fair I only started 24 threads at the forum, so that $5.13 was from only 24 threads.

Here are some of the other responses in the forum so far:
- $46.58
- $26.49
- $2.00
- $5.00
- $14.00
- $2.80
- $0.13
- $0.33

So as you can see, it totally depends on what you put into the forum. The more you put in, the more you get out. You can earn money from revenue sharing forums, but it might not be the most lucrative thing you can do.

Google P2P Network? (or, Its Easy to Score Relevancy When You OWN the Network) :: Social Blog Network News

Google, already has a near infinite number of data points to compute relevancy for the active parts of the web, and is looking to gather even more user data information. The WSJ has background on the story:

Google is preparing a service that would let users store on its computers essentially all of the files they might keep on their personal-computer hard drives — such as word-processing documents, digital music, video clips and images, say people familiar with the matter. The service could let users access their files via the Internet from different computers and mobile devices when they sign on with a password, and share them online with friends.

They also mentioned the C word:

Google will likely have to address copyright issues. Allowing consumers to share different types of files such as music with other users could trigger the sort of copyright complaints the company already faces over videos on its YouTube video sharing site. One person familiar with the matter says Google is discussing with copyright holders how to approach the issue and has some preliminary solutions.

This is going to move Google up the value system by

  • giving them a unique data source
  • giving them unique relevancy signals
  • keeping users locked into their services and using their services longer
  • shift power from copyright holders to Google
  • eventually allow Google to sell content (if they want to - the Google Video trial did not work too well)

But there will also be a big upside, especially to marketers and content creators who are willing to give away high value content to gain mindshare and marketshare. By creating content that people would want to store and share on Google, you get cheap or free exposure for your business interests.

As DaveN said, Google eventually has to move away from links because links are too polluted. What better relevancy signals can they come up with than attention data and how often people cite and share data ON THEIR NETWORK? Feedburner, Google Reader, iGoogle, Gmail, and Youtube are already part of the Google network. Soon your hard drive will be too.

Weekly Search Buzz Roundup - 11/23/07: Thanksgiving, PageRank Drops Again & Reaction to Google AdSense Clickable Areas :: Social Marketing News

Ad: Convert visitors with Google Analytics - free

search-buzz-roundup.gifNow that most of you are stuffed with Turkey and are probably lounging around and buying really cheap discounts (and not working this lovely Friday), it’s time to review the week in search. Fortunately, I’m doing the work for you, so just sit back, relax, and enjoy the show.

Thanksgiving in Searchville

Yesterday was Thanksgiving. The search engines celebrated, and a few forums did too. We’re still sporting our Thanksgiving theme for the next few hours, so take a quick look or review our Thanksgiving theme page (if you miss it!)

And did you notice loss of search and earnings yesterday? Many publishers did; we were eating turkey, guys!

Holiday Buying Season is Here!

…and Google notices. The Google homepage has had a slight change and now features Product Search instead of Videos. It’s time to go shopping, guys! (There are still great deals ongoing today in the States.)

SMX in Israel?

If you want to have a Search Marketing Expo event in Israel this February, you better vote for one on Sphinn. Now I just need to justify going there through Barry. (Pretty please?)

Google Scores!

According to Hitwise, Google dominated search last month. That’s not a surprise given that a lot of webmasters think that Google gives them about 90% of search traffic (!!!).

But when it comes to Local, Ask Wins

Google is testing out new local search results and they’re just not as good as the old ones. But Ask’s new search results for local searches really wins out. You guys should really look into it. :)

Selling Links: Penalties Continue

If you used PayPerPost, your PageRank dropped to 0 unfortunately. Google is making it clear that selling links is just as bad as buying links. But will your rankings change? Not yet, at least.

Google AdSense Video Units Rolled out to Other Countries

We had access to the Google AdSense video units in the US first, but now UK, Ireland, and Canada publishers can take advantage of the new advertising program. Yay!

Microsoft adCenter: Pros and Cons

A few advertisers discussed what they like and hate about MSN adCenter: the adCenter console is probably the worst feature because it’s confusing as all heck, but the ROI is awesome. If you can figure out how to master that console, you’re in for a good return.

gOS: Will You Do it?

Are you going to install the Google Operating System? Most people say yes. I think that speaks for itself: Google is always on the mind.

Google AdSense Clickable Area Change Reaction

After all the brouhaha about the new Google AdSense clickable area changes, there’s finally a reaction from publishers: it’s not so bad. We polled the audience and asked them what they thought: most felt that it remained the same, whereas a few people noticed less clicks and only a small fraction had more traffic. Interesting.

Check your Robots.txt file!

Don’t add noindex: / to your robots.txt file or you’ll be deindexed. Careful, people! You need to really think about how your robots.txt file will impact your traffic.

Move that Google Maps Marker

Google has allowed you to change the placement marker on its maps and I walked you through how to do it. This makes things a lot easier for people who plot an address but get the placement pointer blocks away (like for my home address). Now you can customize it and let others see it.

Google Supplemental Index Changes for Country Searches

We reported earlier this week that you will not be able to see pages in the supplemental index when you perform a site: search if you refined the results to a specific country.

Your Shared IP is Fine

Got shared hosting? You need not worry if you share your website with a porn site. Google has confirmed that it’s safe and is just as good as dedicated hosting. Hmmm!

SEO Tidbits

Here’s some important information for you: Flash intro pages are bad, you can change your menu navigation via CSS, and you should carefully consider whether you want to go with a subdomain on your domain for SEO purposes.

That’s all. Happy Black Friday!
