post You Going To WordCamp Birmingham? :: Search Engine Optimization Weekly Report

September 30th, 2008

Filed under: phoenix search engine marketing greensboro — admin @ 1:11 am

I know I’ve already blogged about WordCamp Birmingham (Alabama) over on my DD blog, but for those of you who don’t read that one, I wanted to make sure to bring it up here too. It’s the first ever WordCamp in the Southeast United States (Sept. 27-28), and I’m going to be speaking at it. Yes, I’m nervous, but y’all will just have to deal with the occasional “um, er”, and stutter. I’ll be speaking on SEO for WordPress though, so even if I stumble over my words now and then, the information will still be useful.

The cost is only $25,…

post Do You Like Yahoo’s New Site Design? :: Social Marketing On StumbleUpon

September 22nd, 2008

Filed under: phoenix search engine marketing greensboro — admin @ 10:07 am

Reuters reports that Yahoo is doing an overhaul of its homepage, but that not all users can see it yet (like me. I never get the good stuff early). According to the Reuters article, this change is intended to “give users a personalized view of the wider Web.”

Here’s their screenshot:

I’m not entirely sure who is seeing the new redesign, as Yahoo says less than 15% of users have been exposed to it. Thus far, there’s been no forum discussion on the impact of the redesign.

Forum discussion continues at WebmasterWorld.

post Online spending rises. Again. :: Web 2.0 News

September 12th, 2008

Filed under: phoenix search engine marketing greensboro — admin @ 2:44 am

Britons have upped the amount they spend online, according to a new report compiled by the Interactive Media in Retail Group (IMRG) and Capgemini.
Again.
Every time they publish this report, the news is the same, online spending rises every month as Britons gradually shift their shopping onto the web. I should just publish the same story […]

post The SEO feasibility report: When SEO is a good idea and when it isn’t :: Search Dynamics

September 12th, 2008

This is a guest post by Paul Burani from Clicksharp Marketing, a very sharp search marketer I met in NY
In the search engine world, it’s easy to think in terms of black and white.  Some traffic you pay for, some you don’t.  There’s page one, and there’s everything else.  And of course we […]

post SEO is a Business :: Search Engine Optimization Weekly Report

September 4th, 2008

Filed under: phoenix search engine marketing greensboro — admin @ 10:43 am

Posted by franz enzenhofer

This is my view of SEO, some people argue it, but these people are mostly ideologists (or developers). CEOs at the other hand just love this little speach. Most of it will be allready clear to people working in our business, but i find it very usefull to explain it to every client (over and over again) at the beginning of a consultancy.

“SEO is the business of getting found, even if the users didn’t know that they were looking for you all along.“

Highlighting the important implications of this sentence:

SEO, Search Engine Optimization, is

  • a business
  • of getting found
  • for brand terms
  • for product (and product purchasing) related terms

Why is SEO important: Search is the most performed action on the internet (with email as a close second).

Scope of SEO:  Every page accessible (prior to the login) of a site with a commercial intent. If your site has no commercial intent, you can still do SEO for fun (I do sometimes), but for real hard-fisted competitive SEO, you must have a site with a commercial intent. Commercial means not necessarily that you sell something, but that you want the user to reach your site because you want him to take a desired action (subscribing to a newsletter, getting the “right” targeted information, making the right vote, etc).

To clarify it once again:

SEO, search engine optimization, is a business!

There’s a start point and a goal you want to reach. Money is a great measurement, but you can also calculate with leads, registrations, active users, …

start point

You need to know your start point. Only when comprehensive web measurement is installed can you can start with SEO. Google Analytic has the best return on investment (It’s free and quite powerful). Web analytics is not a part of SEO but a necessary prerequisite. Really, never ever start without it, because you need to know where you are if you want to reach where you are going. (Plus, you should know when you are there.)

milestones

SEO is a business with milestones. You can identify what the issues are, what the competitive situation is, what you need to do next, and what value this milestone has.

price tag

And most importantly, you can (and you must) attach a price tag to the actions you need to take to achieve your milestones and ultimately your goal.

SEO is

  • not a black art
  • not any other kind of art
  • not white hat magic
  • not black hat magic
  • not a science
  • and definitely not free traffic

but SEO is

  • a business
  • with a start point and a goal
  • with milestones that have estimated and real costs and values

Thx for your screentime!

post Why Alert Competitors to Your SEO Strategy? :: Social Marketing on MySPace

September 4th, 2008

Filed under: phoenix search engine marketing greensboro — admin @ 10:11 am

Recently a SEO working for a lead generation network sent me a letter in the mail alerting me that I could improve my website by linking to their site. They mention some of the large brands they send leads to and state that the link to their site from my site would improve my site’s credibility, user experience, and offer our site visitors security since their lead generation form was secure. :)

Where this letter went astray was

  • recommending a really aggressive and spammy long anchor text (they should have just gave me an easy short option and perhaps a link to a page on their site with linking FAQs and banners)
  • for the most part their site is just a lead generation form (so they give me little real reason to link at it)
  • in the tip where they tell me the transaction is secure they tell me the third party provider (so if I was going to link I might link to the 3rd party provider rather than through their thin affiliate site)
  • they included a business card for their SEO firm in their letter (if I didn’t know what SEO is, then that might make me research it)
  • they sent it to me (if you know the field of SEO well, you probably have heard my name once or twice, and would not want me shadowing your new site’s link building efforts on my older and more authoritative directly competing website)

As a result of the letter they sent out a few weeks ago it looks like the strategy yielded 0 organic links, but I found a couple easy link sources that I have not thought of in the past. I will spend some time further researching that SEO to see what other easy link sources he can find for me. :)

Hidden Risks of Promoting Your Marketing as “SEO”

If you call something marketing or promotion then it is seen as clean and above board. But as soon as you attach the SEO label then eyebrows raise, someone talks about it, and it gets nuked. It gets nuked because if the search engine does not do so then people assume it is a fair strategy, and the search engines have Google has to make examples out of the sites or many people will start doing it.

And it doesn’t have to be that way, as big brands benefit from semantic differences which should be used in their everyday marketing. Smaller brands can also enjoy the same benefits by avoiding the SEO discussion.

Findlaw recently came under scrutiny for trying to sell links to local law firms. Make the pitch to a few thousand lawyers and only one of them has to say no and out you (as a public relations and link building strategy). That discussion works its way into the SEO field and trouble happens. They may only get an aesthetic toolbar PageRank reduction. But they could have simply avoided the risks by talking about boosting exposure rather than SEO.
